Essential Packing List for Deep Creek Lake in March
Deep Creek Lake might not be the first thing to spring to mind when you think of a March vacation, but it can be a fantastic getaway for many reasons this month. It’s a transitional time weather-wise, so early on, you might catch some lingering winter activities, and later in the month, you could glimpse the coming spring. It’s hard to guarantee weather anytime, but this time of year can be exceptionally unpredictable. That’s why packing smart is key.
Here’s your essential packing guide for Deep Creek Lake in March:
Bring all your usual equipment if you’re coming to ski or snowboard. But even if you’re coming without plans to hit the slopes, consider these key items.
Clothing for Deep Creek Lake in March
Pack for dressing in layers, with a few winter items in case you need them. For a base layer, we love these long-sleeved layers from 32 Degrees. They make a whole line of clothing perfect for layering up. If you prefer all-natural fibers, look at Smartwool.
Socks: Don’t forget those feet. If you’re hiking, waterproof socks are a must. At a minimum for day to day activity, you’ll want to be walking around in a something solid like these socks from Smartwool.
You should have a waterproof, insulated jacket for an outer layer for warmth and wind protection. This jacket from Outdoor Ventures should do the trick.
Gloves and hats are a must, along with any favorite scarves or accessories for additional warmth.
Waterproof shoes: If possible, you’ll also want waterproof shoes along with comfortable shoes for the indoors.
Don’t forget a swimsuit! Many rental properties and hotels have indoor swimming pools and/or hot tubs.
Sunglasses: The lake can catch some sunny days in March, so don’t leave those at home.
You should also have some sunscreen handy if you’re going to be outside.
Finally, it’s always good to have some basic first aid supplies with you. We have supplies at our place, but when traveling use these kits.

DCL 100 Celebrates The Anniversary of Deep Creek Lake
If you visit Deep Creek Lake this year, you’ll likely see signs and information about DCL 100 – the Anniversary of Deep Creek Lake. In 1923, The Youghiogheny Hydro-Electric Corporation started building a project to create a hydro-electric dam, which would eventually become Deep Creek Lake. By May 1925, Deep Creek Lake officially came into being. This historic project changed the landscape and destiny of the westernmost county of Maryland. For a century, this lake has shaped the identity of Garrett County.
Throughout 2025, a series of events and projects will mark the 100th anniversary of Deep Creek Lake.
Honoring the Past, Protecting the Future: The DCL100 Committee
Behind this celebration is the dedicated DCL100 Committee. Formed in December 2023 by the Property Owners’ Association of Deep Creek Lake, this committee is a collaborative effort, bringing together representatives from over 10 organizations with a shared interest in the lake’s well-being. The committee is committed to honoring the history and heritage of Deep Creek Lake’s first 100 years. This celebration involves researching the lake’s past, sharing stories, and ensuring its legacy is preserved for future generations.

Amazing Grace: A Taste of Garrett County Returns to Deep Creek Lake
If you’ll be at Deep Creek Lake at the end of April, consider attending Amazing Grace: A Taste of Garrett County – a culinary showcase of Garrett County’s best food. It is happening on April 29, 2025, from 5-8 pm at the Agricultural Hall at the Garrett County Fairgrounds. This event brings people together to enjoy delicious food from area restaurants, chefs, and food vendors to support Stage West Arts Collective (formerly GLAF).
Tickets are $45 per person, and admission is free for children nine and under.
March typically marks the start of spring, but it doesn’t always feel that way at Deep Creek Lake. Some years, the temperatures may warm up, and the snow starts to melt, but we can also get more winter. Ideally, for most of us, the beginning of the month would offer a last chance to take advantage of winter sports, as it likely will this year, and the end would usher in a shift as winter slows down and spring begins to take over.
But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t visit the lake. March can be a great month to enjoy the area.
